What a year it's been

Looking Back on the Best Year in Rescue P.A.W.S. History

Happy New Year! As we talk about the final month of 2021, it’s hard not to reflect back on the entirety of the year. The last 12 months have been ground breaking for Rescue P.A.W.S. We have carried out more sterilizations than the last three years combined, broke the 100 mark for adoptions for the first time ever, and more than doubled the amount of medical cases coming through our doors than any previous year.

In December alone we completed 213 sterilizations! This is our highest number of sterilizations yet in one month. When that figure is put in to the equation of the number of puppies prevented from being born to the streets, it’s beyond imaginable. With around 25% of our sterilizations being female dogs, this resulted in the prevention of nearly 3,000,000 puppies being born to the streets of Thailand over the next six years, a number difficult to fathom but one that we are immensely proud of.

With the vast increase in sterilizations now being carried out on a daily basis, we have purchased 20 new sterilization kits, which has greatly increased our efficiency.

One of the big contributing factors to Decembers high sterilization number is the sterilization event that we held at a local temple. Last month we mentioned that our Outreach Team spotted a local temple that was housing up to 70 dogs. Fortunately, our team were able to successfully liaise with the Head Monk at the temple, enabling us to host two sterilization events on site.

The first event was an internally organized mobile clinic in which we sterilized 15 dogs in a day. A couple of weeks later we returned on a much larger scale. Organized in conjunction with the Thailand Livestock Department, four vets (including our own) sterilized 41 dogs. The amount of work that went in to this event was absolutely incredible, not only from the work of the vets, but also teams out catching dogs, preparing them for surgery, carrying out post-operative care, and supporting the overall effort. It was a huge success and this temple should have no “next generation” of street dogs.

Our Rangsi Temple puppies were finally old enough to be sterilized. Rangsi Temple was the site used for our World Rabies Day event in September. We had been working at this temple for just a month prior to the event and witnessed the birth of a new litter of puppies. We’ve cared and watched this litter grow in to nine beautiful and healthy dogs who are now all sterilized. As you can see from the photo, they were no trouble catching and bringing back to the clinic.

Helping Beloved Pets and Strays Alike

December was not a time to take the foot off of the gas pedal and coast into the New Year. We had an influx of new medical cases come through our doors. One of these was a poor chap we nicknamed Rolling Stones, who was suffering from a blockage in his urethra. The owner, being unable to afford private vet care and incredibly panicked, brought him in as he hadn’t eaten for days. Fortunately, our amazing veterinary team performed an emergency surgery to remove the blockage that, otherwise, would have resulted in the poor boy’s death. After a week of post-operative care with a urinary catheter and some fluids, Rolling Stones went home with having fully recovered. He was welcomed home by his loving owner who was over the moon to see him happy and healthy.

The TVT patient we’ve been caring for has been a real dream, waiting patiently each week for her chemotherapy and being so friendly to all our staff. All we can say is she must be well looked after by her local community as she is one of the happiest, friendliest, and most patient soi dogs we’ve ever known. She’s well on her way to being ‘TVT free’ and no longer a risk to the dogs in her area

Heartwarming

Supporting the Cause

Here at rescue P.A.W.S., we are always overwhelmed at the support we receive during our times of need.  On the lead up the Christmas we held a Christmas fundraiser in the hope of changing and saving more lives over the festive period. One particular fundraiser we started was our “Save a life this Christmas” with the idea that, for every USD $100 raised, a present would be placed under our Christmas Tree. Thanks to the support of our wonderful pack we were able to raise $515 and place 5 presents under the tree. This additional fundraiser meant that we could purchase extra food for those in need and provide more vaccines and live saving treatment.

We also launched our Rescue P.A.W.S. store! You you can now visit our website and purchase many different items with free shipping worldwide. Have a look at our T-Shirts, homeware and gadgets here https://rescuepawsthailand.org/shop/

We also received the amazing gift of 1000kg in dry dog food. Here at Rescue P.A.W.S. we go through A LOT of food. Feeding our onsite residents, stray packs and donating food local means that we go through hundreds of kilograms of dry food per week. This donation will go a long way in helping those in need in the community.

Another amazing Christmas gift we received this month was a brand-new Power Washer. With the abundance of new puppies and dogs we are bringing in for sterilization, you can only imagine the mess that needs cleaning every day. The power washer makes for a more effective clean, meaning a hygienic and safe environment for all our dogs, as well as for our staff.

Adoption

Local and International Adoption Updates

Further good news is the incredible amount of domestic and international adoptions we saw this month. Whether it was related to Christmas (don’t worry, we made absolutely sure everyone adopting a puppy knew it wasn’t just a Christmas gift but, a life commitment) or simply due to the generous nature of the festive season, we saw an awesome 14 animals adopted in December, three of which were international adoptions, all flying to different parts of Canada!

Community Outreach

Giving hope to the community

As always, it’s puppy galore out there at the moment. With multiple reports of new litters being born across Hua Hin and the addition of puppies being dumped at the multiple temples we attend, the number of flea and tick treatments have sky rocketed. Over the last month we have tended to more than double the number of puppies (204) than we’ve ever seen in a single month!

This month we provided yearly boosters to our packs. With almost 200 dogs due for vaccine boosters, it took two whole days for our Outreach Team to get to them all. Fortunately, thanks to Epicollect (our online database), we were able to successfully track which dogs were due and their exact location, making the process much more efficient compared to previous years.

Onsite Arrivals

We don’t talk about our feline friends all that much in our reports but they’re very much a part of Rescue P.A.W.S. This month we saw four new kitten arrivals that were all below the age of three weeks. One in particular was only a few days old, and sadly passed away, but the other three are on their way to finding forever homes. One unfortunately is paralyzed and is receiving daily care.

Through a rescuer In Hua Hin and Bangkok that finds local foster and forever homes for rescued stray dogs, we are helping a family of four puppy siblings who, due to malnutrition when they were small pups, have developed growth issues in their back legs. We are helping the puppies to make a full recovery and using our partner rescuer to find them forever homes.

Wondering Who to sponsor?

Velix arrived at Rescue P.A.W.S. after she was found dumped at a local villa. When she arrived, Velix was given a blood test to check for any diseases or health conditions. Sadly, she tested positive for Feline leukemia virus (FeLV), a highly contagious retrovirus that infects the immune system of cats. FeLV is released into the environment through a cats saliva, nasal secretions, urine, feces, and milk. For this reason, Velix will need to be isolated from the other cats in our care. Though she will need to be isolated, we would like to create a safe space for Velix to enjoy. Sadly, FeLV is incurable but supportive care can improve the quality of life, health, and longevity of cats with FeLV. Your sponsorship can help us to provide the puuuurfect spot for Velix and ensure that she has the best life.
