Back with a Bang

Sterilizations are back in full swing

February once again proved to be a bustling month filled with numerous surgeries, medical cases, miraculous recoveries, and three heartwarming adoptions!

During February, we resumed our regular sterilization efforts, with a total of 247 dogs and cats sterilized. Our dedicated veterinary team remains tirelessly engaged throughout the day, attending to a continuous influx of ill and injured animals, as well as pet owners seeking vaccinations and parasite treatments for their beloved companions. Our doors remain open to anyone seeking assistance, as our primary focus lies in preventative treatment. By emphasizing preventive care, we aim to alleviate unnecessary suffering, as it is always preferable to cure. Offering free veterinary care is paramount for the welfare of animals in our community. We firmly believe that financial constraints should not prevent individuals from providing essential care to animals.

Dobby, aka, Moo Wan (direct translation Sweet Pork) is much better after a long recovery from illness caused by malnutrition. She battled many obstacles thrown her way but seems to have finally turned the corner. The lack of nutrition has, however, left some permanent damage; she suffers from slight neurological deficits and her front paws have not developed as expected. This means, she most likely will stay at Rescue P.A.W.S. for the rest of her life. This week she will be joining the Special Squad on the beach for the first time and we are confident she will love it.

Medical Emergencies

We saw some amazing recoveries

We were notified of a dog with a bad infection in his ear. The team set out to find him and luckily they were able to dart him and bring him in for much needed medical attention. On closer inspection, it was discovered that the wound was actually an ulcerated tumor. The dog, named Whou, needed to have his whole outside ear removed to prevent the tumor from spreading. The surgery was a success and Whou recovered quickly. He has since returned to the beach where he lives, rejoining his pack and living a cancer-free life!

Chicken continues to gain strength every day and will soon be ready for sterilization. After that, we hope to find him a forever home. Chicken is an absolute character and there is never a boring moment when he is around. To burn off what seems like never ending energy, Chicken has been joining the Special Squad Beach Walks and he is absolutely loving them! As he is still very little and only has three working legs, we carry him to the beach and back in a special sling, alongside Miss Honey Stubbs and Fudge in their individual prams. Just because they all have disabilities doesn’t mean they should miss out on all the fun. We work very hard to give all our dogs and cats the best life possible while we look for forever homes for them.

Dragon (Mongkorn in Thai) was reported to us as a geriatric dying dog. When we arrived to investigate the situation, what we saw broke our hearts. Instead of being an elderly dog, Dragon was only about 4 months old. But he was skin and bone. Hardly no hair and his exposed skin was cracked, bleeding and infected. He truly looked like an old dying dog. His skin issues were caused by mange, which is caused by a small mite that burrows into the skin causing intense itching. The scratching in turn breaks the skin creating wounds and bacterial infection. If not treated, the infection can become lethal, as skin is the biggest organ in the body. Mange is slow to treat, but incredibly easy to prevent. Just a simple tablet will provide protection against not only mites, but also ticks and fleas which come with a whole wrath of other health problems. If you would like to prevent this horrible condition from happening to our dogs, you can do so by donating here:

Medical Emergencies

This old man has stolen the show

Bruce is a sweet elderly dog living in a Myanmar refugee village near the Thai-Myanmar border. He was reported to us as being manurised. Refugees in Thailand struggle to feed themselves so they often can’t provide proper nutrition to their dogs. Also being the oldest of the pack, Bruce didn’t have the strength to fend for himself and often was only left with scraps to eat after the younger dogs had already eaten. Since arrival, Bruce has stolen our hearts with his gentle personality and never ending tail wags. Upon arrival, he was emaciated, but luckily, his blood work wasn’t too bad. He has been on a high quality dog food, medication and supplements and is slowly gaining weight and energy. He still has a long way to go, but his old man looks and the sweetest personality have made him a favorite amongst all volunteers.

Adoptions

Finding Homes Near and Far

We organized not one, but three, adoptions this month. Tucker, Som Tam (direct translation: Papaya Salad) and Kallie found their forever families. Tucker will be right here in Hua Hin, Kallie in Bangkok and Som Tam is traveling all the way to Germany! All have settled in extremely well. Som Tam especially is enjoying the quiet, new environment and a slow-paced lifestyle as she was always quite shy and reserved. Tucker Is continuing his nonchalant attitude in his new home and his new dad absolutely adores him. From being dumped to now having happy families, we are so thrilled for all of them!

If you are interested in adopting one of our furry friends, head over to our website for more information on the process and to get in touch. We are able to assist with transportation, both locally and internationally.

Food Glorious Food

It's our favourite part of the job!

Our outreach team has been busy feeding many hungry mouths and promoting sterilizations in the community. From daily feeding, monitoring, and preventative health care to capturing dogs for sterilization, our work never seems to end. But nothing lifts our spirits more when our packs hear our truck and rush out to greet us for their daily meal. Without our help, many of these dogs would struggle for existence. But thanks to your support, they are living free, happy and healthy lives in the community.

We would also like to thank our long standing supporter MARS who delivered another very generous food donation to us. Their support has been instrumental in helping us keep our resident dogs and packs healthy and well fed going back more than four years. We really cannot thank them enough.

Looking for inspiration

Last month, we visited the Soi Dog foundation in Phuket to learn more about the important work they do. Our emphasis for the visit was to learn more about the infrastructure utilized to build a bigger functioning kennels and hospital. We were warmly welcomed by the Soi Dog team and came home with plenty of new ideas for Rescue P.A.W.S.’ new home. Learning from an immensely successful charity that has been in existence for many decades is a huge privilege and we are very grateful for this new support network.

Thank you for your support

A little bit of love goes a really long way!

We received a huge donation all the way from Australia! A lovely family booked a day visit with us and did a collection drive for donations for Rescue P.AW.S. before departure. The amount of donations received was huge and even included two IV fluid pumps! The family loved their time at Rescue P.A.W.S. and pledged to support us even after their return to Australia. Another amazing donation was from a family from the UK, who wanted to support our Myanmar Refugee Education Project. More than a hundred books were donated and now the children have their very own library that we set up at their temple school. We love meeting generous people from all over the world. They open their hearts and help us spread the word about Rescue P.A.W.S. and the work we do.

We have big news!

Drum roll please...

Our mission to find a new location for Rescue P.A.W.S. has been a long and strenuous one, but we are beyond excited to share with you that Rescue P.A.W.S. is now the proud owner of our new home! In an unimaginable act of generosity, Rescue P.A.W.S. was donated three rai of land that will now forever be ours. We did a public hearing and received a landslide vote of confidence from the community for Rescue P.A.W.S. to set up our new home in Pranburi.

We are just at the beginning of our journey and we will need a lot of support to build our new home from the ground up. We will build a clinic and office, two kennel areas, including a disabled dog area, catteries and a big exercise area for the dogs. Our dream is to make our new home the best possible place for the animals in our care. We want a facility that is a peaceful home for our resident animals and a bigger and better veterinary clinic. For the last 10 years, we’ve conducted our work from an old, deteriorating police box. We have love for this little clinic, in which we have done amazing things for the animals and the community around us. But having said that, we cannot wait to see what we are capable of in our new purpose-built facility. We truly believe that sky will be the limit. Any donations, however modest, will be so greatly appreciated to help us realize our dream!

Wondering who to sponsor?

Meet Pumpkin, one of our longest residents with the hardest journeys. Pumpkin and her siblings were found on the side of the road after being abandoned by their mother. They were brought to Rescue P.A.W.S. where they all grew into confident and mischievous puppies, except Pumpkin. Pumpkin has always struggled with social anxiety and being around people makes her nervous. We are working with her now more than ever to get her ready for the possibility of adoption. She loves to play on the beach and run around with the other dogs so we are focusing on her favourite things at the moment.

You can sponsor Pumpkin over at the Rescue P.A.W.S. website.
